As the authors discussed in their paper, the main implication of the results is that a significant number of young children develop PTSD following traumatic events. Caregivers and practitioners should be aware of this in order to seek and provide support for these children. Yet, this is not the case in clinical practice.
Traumatic stressors have always been a part of the human experience. What is now referred to as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was first studied in the context of military trauma during the Civil War and World War I but most extensively in World War II. Much of what we know about the medical and psychological management of PTSD has its origins in military psychiatric approaches, and a review of these practices reveals important tenets that should be applied in current treatment for both military and nonmilitary PTSD.. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent in military personnel and first responders, many of whom do not respond to currently available treatments. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy for treating chronic PTSD in this population.. Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at elevated risk for alcohol use problems, a relationship commonly explained by using alcohol to cope with unpleasant symptoms of PTSD. However, patterns of alcohol use motives, more broadly, have not been well characterized in veteran samples, nor have they been evaluated in the context of other relevant factors, such as normative personality traits. The aims of the present study were to identify empirically derived drinking motive and personality typologies to determine whether these typologies differ as a function of PTSD status (i.e., nontrauma control, trauma exposed−no PTSD, and PTSD) and to evaluate associations between typology and PTSD symptom severity and alcohol consumption, respectively. Trauma exposure has been associated with increased risk for obesity. Most studies have focused on childhood abuse. For example, a recent meta-analysis found that adults who reported childhood physical, sexual, or emotional abuse were more likely to be obese, and results did not differ by gender (Hemmingsson et al., 2014). However, adult onset trauma, including combat exposure, may also be associated with obesity and obesity-related illnesses
Survivors of sexual violence often engage in coping strategies such as risky sexual behavior. The present study used a behavioral task to measure sexual risk-taking following experiences of positive or negative affect and an emotion suppression experimental manipulation. The purpose of the present study was to use eye-tracking technology to (a) show that attentional control can be used to reduce attentional bias to threat (ABT) among those with higher levels of posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, (b) identify the specific attentional control (AC) processes (i.e., inhibition, shifting, working memory updating) that account for this effect, and (c) determine the short- (sympathetic nervous system reactivity) and long-term effects (PTS symptoms) of using attentional control in this manner. Adjustment disorder has been recategorized as a trauma- and stressor-related disorder in DSM-5. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of adjustment disorder in the first 12 months after severe injury; to determine whether adjustment disorder was a less severe disorder compared with other disorders in terms of disability and quality of life; to investigate the trajectory of adjustment disorder; and to examine whether the subtypes described in DSM-5 are distinguishable. Objective: The aim of this study was threefold: (1) to examine the type and frequency of trauma reminders reported by survivors 2.5 years after a terrorist attack; (2) to examine whether frequency of exposure to trauma reminders is associated with psychological distress and level of functioning; and (3) to compare the worst trauma reminders reported by the same survivors at 2 different time points. Trauma can disrupt an individual's core beliefs about themselves, others, and the world. Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is thought to be the outcome of a reconstruction process involving ruminative processing. This meta-analysis examined the strength of the associations between event-related intrusive and deliberate rumination and PTG. Most voice hearers report childhood trauma. Many voice hearers report comorbid post-traumatic stress symptoms and that the content of their voices (auditory verbal hallucinations) is directly (voices repeat phrases spoken by perpetrators) or indirectly (voice content and trauma is thematically similar) related to their trauma. The factors that maintain trauma-related voices are unknown, and there is limited research in this area. This study aimed to identify potential maintaining factors of trauma-related voices by reviewing models of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and positive symptoms of psychosis. This naturalistic study of evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in U.S. veterans examined treatment utilization and completion rates, the characteristics of EBPs in an ecologically valid sample, and the factors associated with premature termination. The study is an extension of previous work by Deviva and colleagues (2017), and was conducted in a Department of Veterans Affairs PTSD clinic that included 130 veterans.. Sexual assault is a significant problem on college campuses, with growing public attention. The psychosocial ramifications of sexual assault for college survivors are significant and affect each person differently. Effective interventions that incorporate narrative techniques are instrumental for sexual assault recovery. Photovoice is a narrative method that encourages participants to make meaning of their experiences while integrating trauma into the larger context of their lives. This article highlights an exploratory study of the photovoice method as a narrative therapeutic technique for college sexual assault survivors. The photo-taking, dialoguing, and exhibiting process of photovoice empowered participants to take control over their story and their recovery, as well as to increase campus understanding of the posttraumatic impacts of sexual assault.
