These findings reinforce the importance of considering a BPD diagnosis when assessing for suicide risk. In addition, the findings demonstrate a statistically significant relationship between BPD criteria (specifically: identity disturbance, chronic feelings of emptiness, and frantic efforts to avoid abandonment) with attempted suicide. Consequently, these components should not be overlooked in clinical suicide risk assessments.

There has been a sharp increase in the military suicide rates in 2004. While, borderline personality disorder (BPD) has a stronger association with suicide attempts than any other mental health disorder, there is limited evidence concerning the prevalence and scope of BPD symptoms among military personnel. This secondary data analysis compared active duty suicidal soldiers to characterize the presence-absence of BPD diagnostic criteria and lifetime history of self-directed violence in a suicidal military sample. . Objective: Although previous research has suggested that people with a history of using psychiatric crisis services are at higher risk for suicide, it is unclear whether this link is attributable to individual risk factors or iatrogenic effects of service utilization. We examined this question by analyzing data from a randomized controlled trial of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a treatment for highly suicidal individuals in which patients took advantage of crisis services less than those in the comparison condition. . Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The aim of this study was to investigate the cognitive, emotional, and contextual experience of NSSI in 107 youth (aged 15–25 years) with BPD who had minimal prior exposure to treatment. Using ecological momentary assessment, participants completed a randomly prompted questionnaire about their affect, self-injurious thoughts, and behaviors six times per day for 6 days. In this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials, outcomes of psychotherapies (most notably dialectical behavior therapy and psychodynamic approaches) significantly improved borderline-relevant outcomes (symptoms, self-harm, and suicide) compared with control interventions. However, differences dissipated in well-designed and implemented trials or if the control group was balanced for manualization of treatment or the involvement of the study team in treatment. Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) is prominent in individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and there is abundant evidence that affect regulation plays an important role in NSSI in the majority of patients. Affective variability is a core feature of BPD, and thus, we hypothesize that NSSI has an affect stabilization function in BPD.
