Trauma exposure has been associated with increased risk for obesity. Most studies have focused on childhood abuse. For example, a recent meta-analysis found that adults who reported childhood physical, sexual, or emotional abuse were more likely to be obese, and results did not differ by gender (Hemmingsson et al., 2014). However, adult onset trauma, including combat exposure, may also be associated with obesity and obesity-related illnesses

Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy9.5 (Sep 2017): 583-586.
Objective: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased risk for suicide and appear to occur in disproportionately high rates among men who served in the U.S. military. However, research has yet to examine a comprehensive range of ACEs among Iraq/Afghanistan veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or whether these premilitary stressors may contribute to suicidal behavior in this highly vulnerable population. Veterans with military sexual trauma (MST) are at risk for a variety of psychiatric conditions, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Survivors of MST are also likely to experience diminished quality of life (QoL). Individuals with higher lifetime incidence of sexual trauma may also be at increased risk for poorer outcomes in QoL and psychiatric symptomatology. The differences in psychological sequelae among those who have experienced sexual trauma as children, and those whose sexual trauma exposure is limited to adulthood are relatively understudied. The majority of sexual trauma literature has focused primarily on civilian trauma, and comparatively few studies have specifically examined psychosocial sequelae (e.g., QoL) in veterans with MST. This study examined how childhood sexual abuse (CSA) affects overall QoL as well as severity of PTSD and depressive symptoms. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.

Families, Systems, & Health (Apr 17, 2017).
Introduction: The impact of sexual violence (SV) on mental health, self-care, and interpersonal relationships is profound and poses special challenges to health care delivery. Reproductive health care merits special attention because the care required may be linked to reminders of past abuse. We explored facilitators and barriers affecting the use of reproductive health services among women veterans with a history of SV. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
