The Frailsafe project focused on introducing a checklist with the aim to increase completion of key clinical assessments and to facilitate communication for the care of older patients in acute admissions.
Alcohol consumption constitutes a substantial burden of disease. Older people are being admitted to hospital for alcohol problems in increasing numbers. A recent systematic review reports cautious supportive evidence for primary prevention interventions in reducing excessive alcohol consumption in older drinkers, but does not focus on treatment of dependent drinkers. New data published today show that a record number of people made a recovery from mental ill health, due to NHS talking therapies last year. The annual report on NHS England’s Improving Access to Talking Therapies (IAPT) programme, shows that half of people completing a course of treatment for conditions including depression and anxiety, recovered from their condition.

A survey of 1,000 people, carried out by the Care Quality Commission, asked people to rank their stress levels during key life events including organising a wedding and finding a child a nursery or school place. Over two thirds of those who had been involved in choosing a care home or home care service said that it was the experience they found most stressful.

With thousands of smartphone apps targeting mental health, it is difficult to ignore the rapidly expanding use of apps in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Patients with psychiatric conditions are interested in mental health apps and have begun to use them. That does not mean that clinicians must support, endorse, or even adopt the use of apps, but they should be prepared to answer patients’ questions about apps and facilitate shared decision making around app use. Nutrition and hydration play a key role in keeping the skin healthy. The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence recognises deficiencies in diet as a risk for developing pressure ulcers and international guidance recommends using a nutritional screening tool to assess risk of malnutrition and other risk factors.
Conclusions Study participants had high levels of substance misuse and anxiety. Some students’ fitness to practice may be impaired as a result of their substance misuse or symptoms of psychological distress.
