Nausea and vomiting can be distressing and debilitating for patients, and can affect quality of life significantly. Studies assessing associations of childhood psychosocial adversity (e.g. sexual abuse, physical neglect, parental death), as opposed to socioeconomic adversity, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in adulthood are scarce. Children in foster care frequently have histories of physical/sexual abuse and neglect, increasing their risk for externalizing behaviors (EB; e.g., aggression). According to the differential susceptibility theory, children with reactive temperaments (e.g., negative emotionality) may be particularly vulnerable to early maltreatment, but may also benefit the most from environmental enrichment such as family cohesion. In a high-risk longitudinal sample of 82 children adopted from foster care in Los Angeles County from 1996 and 2001, we examined predictions of EB from childhood to adolescence/young adulthood from temperament, preadoption maltreatment, and adoptive family cohesion. A twin study has provided new evidence of the link between bullying and mental health issues in later life. Once confounding factors were removed, bullying was shown to have an effect on anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.

FINLAND Children who are young for their school year are more likely to be diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than their older peers, new research has shown. The study suggests parents and teachers may be mistaking relative immaturity for symptoms of the disorder, and calls for flexibility in school starting dates.
