Beide Regierungen seien für den Abschluss einer "ehrgeizigen, ausgewogenen" Vereinbarung, heißt es in einer am Donnerstag veröffentlichen bilateralen Erklärung. Aber man werde darauf achten, dass zentrale Forderungen erfüllt würden: EU-Unternehmen müssten Zugang zu öffentlichen Aufträgen in den USA bekommen, auch auf Ebene der US-Bundesstaaten. Genannt werden zudem der nötige Schutz geografischer Angaben europäischer Produkte und bestimmter Dienstleistungen sowie das Festschreiben von Nachhaltigkeitszielen und der sozialen Verantwortung von Unternehmen.
EU und USA wollen einander im Rahmen des geplanten Freihandelsabkommens (TTIP) über Gesetzesvorhaben frühzeitig informieren. Nun wurde von Nichtregierungsorganisationen die EU-Position zur sogenannten "Regulatorischen Kooperation" öffentlich gemacht. Die TTIP-Kritiker fürchten, dass Großkonzerne künftig schon in der Frühphase Einfluss auf Gesetze nehmen können.
Im Geheimen arbeiten EU und USA an einem „Freihandelsabkommen“. Die Filmproduzentin Manuela Stehr beschreibt die Konsequenzen, die TTIP hätte: „Damit würde Europas Kino die Grundlage entzogen.“
TTIP und TPP: Präsident Barack Obama möchte zwei Freihandelsabkommen abschließen. Es ist fraglich, ob das noch in seiner Amtszeit klappt. Bei solchen Abkommen könnte der US-Kongress jede einzelne Vorschrift ablehnen. In einem Deal mit Obama verzichtet der Kongress darauf, bekommt dafür aber eine Art Bedenkzeit. Inklusive Wartezeiten würde die Unterzeichnung der Gesetze in die heiße Wahlkampfphase fallen. Die US-Politik liegt vor und nach der Präsidentschaftswahl jedoch lahm.
