Many adults with intellectual disabilities require nutritional support as feeding problems are prevalent in this population. While many types of nutritional support are available, enteral feeding tubes, such as nasogastric (NG) tubes, are considered safe and effective. NG tube feeding is a common clinical procedure carried out to maintain patients’ nutritional needs when they have swallowing difficulties or cannot tolerate oral feeding. Insertion of an NG tube provides adequate nutrition and improves positive health outcomes and quality of life, but being fed through an NG tube may alter patients’ perceptions of feeding and mealtimes. People with a learning disability often experience health inequalities. Inquiries and reports have detailed the possible catastrophic consequences of inadequate healthcare for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers. This is despite the Equality Act 2010 specifying that providers have a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments to enable the delivery of adequate and efficient services.
This article reviews the literature on reasonable adjustments to explore if the introduction of colour-coded patient identification wristbands for people with learning disabilities who are admitted to general hospitals could improve safety, experience and outcomes and influence the provision of a reasonably adjusted healthcare service. Little is known about the hospitalisation rate of adults with severe/profound intellectual disability (PID) presenting at emergency services or about the appropriateness of hospital admissions in this population. Examining the possible differences in the patterns of hospitalisation between people with PID and those without intellectual disability (ID) may shed light on aspects of health and illness in these patients and may in turn make it possible to differentiate more clearly between mild-moderate ID and PID. Communication aids folders containing the BSL alphabet, Makaton signs and a range of charts and pictures, have been distributed to every ward and department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
The folder also includes a hospital passport template and an essential ‘reasonable adjustments’ chart, and will support communicating with patients with specific learning / communication disabilities.

Cumbrian born Brian Evans has joined the team at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) in a brand new role to add further experience to the Nursing division and improve services for local people with learning difficulties.
As UHMBT’s Clinical Nurse Specialist for Learning Disabilities, new recruit Brian Evans will be focusing on enhancing the care and experience for patients with learning disabilities.

Early research completed by the students identified that fellow student nurses (across all fields) lacked confidence when caring for patients with a learning disability and felt like there were time constraints involved in the management of their care.
The students developed an interactive session aimed to generate discussion, evoke emotions and feelings and to encourage students and HCP’s to understand how their actions can make a huge difference to the quality of care delivered, ensuring that it is compassionate, caring and person centered.
