BBC iPlayer relaunches today in an attempt to develop beyond "catch-up" - adding some new features that see the site integrate deeply with social networking sites, and compete with the personalised, flexible viewing offered by TV platforms such as Sky+. The new beta version at http://beta.bbc.co.uk/iplayer has a redesigned homepage that creates more space by separating TV and radio. Users are encouraged to sign in to the site to take advantage of the new features: it's free, and an existing bbc.co.uk ID can be used.
Dial-up connections and flaky Wi-Fi are made significantly more tolerable with Opera 10, it seems. After yesterdays news that Opera 10's first beta had landed, some testing was in order. One major new feature is Opera Turbo — server-side compression — which shrinks pages before sending them down your browser. With a 100Mbps connection throttled to a laughable 50Kbps, Opera 10 proved itself to outperform every other desktop browser on the planet, and there are graphs to prove it. Javascript benchmarks put the new browser in fourth place overall, after Chrome 2, Safari 4 and Firefox, but it indeed passes the Acid3 test with a perfect score. If you ever use a laptop on public Wi-Fi, to not have Opera 10 installed could be a big mistake

Though Chrome version 1.0 emerged from beta in December, Google decided to move it back into beta testing and tinker. For those who aren't interested in playing with a beta edition, Google still offers the stable version for everyday Chrome users, as well as a developer version.
