April is a peak time for nurses and midwives across the UK to renew their registration. Supported by the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Midwives and Unison, we have produced a short animation reminding nurses and midwives of the different ways they can pay their registration fee to avoid lapsing from the register.
Care planning and co-ordination are central to the delivery of comprehensive mental health care especially where individuals have complex health and social care needs. Although the terms are often used together they clearly imply different sets of processes, practices and ultimately experiences for individuals using and working in services. New figures that we’ve published today show an increase in the number of nurses and midwives leaving our register while at the same time, numbers joining have slowed down. This has resulted in an overall reduction in the numbers of nurses and midwives registered to work in the UK.
Three main areas of difference between new and experienced nurses relating to shift work challenges in a nursing environment emerged: perceptions about the utility of working in shifts, coping strategies and social support at home and work. Most experienced nurses found shift work advantageous, especially those with dependents. Coping strategies included flexible shift arrangements in both groups. Experienced nurses detailed the importance of support from family and friends while inexperienced nurses described feeling disconnected from social supports. Interim guidance on pay for nurse apprentices has been issued for employers that are running courses from September 2017.
The NHS Staff Council is currently in discussions regarding what the appropriate pay rates may be for individuals undertaking a nurse apprenticeship (and other higher and degree related apprenticeships). However, these discussions are unlikely to be completed in time for the small number of nurse apprenticeship training courses running from September 2017.
Open access. Suicidal behaviour is frequent in psychiatric in-patients and much staff time and resources are devoted to assessing and managing suicide risk. However, little is known about staff experiences of working with in-patients who are suicidal.

This was set up by the Lead Nurse for Nurse and Midwifery Retention after realising that we are all working in small pockets in the organisation and we don’t always have a platform to share ideas and support our wider team.
It has effortlessly reached over 300 members of the team by word of mouth and has had loads of engagement from all departments.
It is an incredibly positive and supportive area where all members are able to network with each other and learn about what is going on in the Trust.
CBTp is recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence for service users with psychosis at every stage of their illness, but provision of this intervention is not widespread. The use of dialectical behaviour therapy for patients with binge eating disorder has developed recently and, as part of the Eating Disorder Service in Forth Valley, an adapted dialectical behaviour therapy treatment programme has been piloted prior to patients progressing on to the weight management service, to find out if an adapted dialectical behaviour therapy group can help patients with binge eating disorder reduce bingeing behaviour and improve quality of life.
