Es ist ein kleiner Satz mit großen Auswirkungen: "Neben noch effizienteren Verbrennungsmotoren werden wir in Zukunft auch verstärkt auf elektrisch angetriebene Automobile setzen." Was VW-Chef Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn da sagt, passt zu den Ankündigungen der jüngsten Zeit. Bereits Daimler-Chef Dieter Zetsche hatte Mitte Mai mit klaren Worten überrascht: "Der Weg der Autoindustrie führt zu emissionsfreien Fahrzeugen." Und auch Nissans Ankündigung, zusammen mit NEC Lithium-Ionen-Akus zu fertigen, zeigt, dass das Rennen um effiziente elektrische Antriebe Fahrt aufnimmt.

Nachdem am 11. Mai die japanische Zeitung Nikkei berichtet hatte, dass Volkswagen und der japanische Batteriehersteller Sanyo eine Partnerschaft eingehen, bestätigt Volkswagen heute die Pläne. In der Kooperation wollen die beiden Unternehmen demnach gemeinsam Lithium-Ionen-Akkus entwickeln. Nach Ansicht von Martin Winterkorn ist die Elektrifizierung des Antriebs der richtige Weg, die Mobilität von morgen zu sichern. Dazu gehöre auch die Rückgewinnung von Energie. "Solange es aber keinen leistungsfähigen Speicher für die Energie gibt und der Fahrbetrieb nicht den Bedürfnissen der Kunden entspricht, nützt das Ganze wenig."
Die emissionsfreie Fahrt im reinen Elektrobetrieb sei aktuell schon möglich, allerdings noch mit eingeschränkten Geschwindigkeiten und Reichweiten. Umso wichtiger sei die Entwicklung neuer Akkumulatoren, die durch Kapazität, Größe, Gewicht und Kosten einen effizienteren Einsatz in den Autos ermöglichen. Die Lithium-Ionen-Technik habe das Potenzial, zukünftig auch die besonderen Anforderungen an Elektrotraktionssysteme im Kraftfahrzeug zu erfüllen.
