Als im September 2008 die US-Investmentbank Lehman Brothers zusammenbrach, wurde der Gesamtwert aller Schulden weltweit mit 160 Billionen Dollar beziffert. Ein Wert, der das globale Bruttoinlandsprodukt um das Dreieinhalbfache überstieg.

Seit Beginn der Finanz- und Verschuldungskrise in der Europäischen Union werden demokratisch gewählte Parlamente und Regierungen von den privaten Akteuren der Kapitalmärkte in die Enge getrieben. Der "Fiskalpakt“ verpflichtet langfristig zu strikter Haushaltsdisziplin durch "Schuldenbremsen“. Unterdessen wächst das Unbehagen über demokratische Defizite beim parlamentarischen Umgang mit scheinbar alternativlosen, immer größeren „Rettungspaketen“.
Vorsicht! Die Finanzkrise hat den Neoliberalismus nicht umgebracht - im Gegenteil. Trotz entgrenzter Märkte hat die irre Ideologie vom schwachen Staat überlebt. Und Merkel-Deutschland trägt die Verantwortung. (Von Jakob Augstein)
Die große Angst der Europäer ist Realität geworden: Italien hat sich angesteckt, weitere Schwergewichte zittern. Der Euro-Rettungsschirm ist zu klein, der Ruf nach der einzig wirklich effektiven Finanzfeuerwehr wird laut.
Die Euro-Krise ist eine „Extremlage“, der sich auch die EZB nicht entziehen kann, ist Nobelpreisträger Krugman überzeugt. Deshalb muss sie sich vom Primat der Preisstabilität lösen und Staatsfinanzierer werden.
Wie kann die Schuldenkrise bewältigt werden? Die Soziologen Jens Beckert und Wolfgang Streeck haben davor gewarnt, dass die Krise auf das soziale System übergreifen kann. Dabei führt kein Weg an einer systemischen Therapie vorbei. (Von Stephan Schulmeister)
Die Herabstufung der USA tut der Beliebtheit amerikanischer Staatsanleihen keinen Abbruch. Das zeigt: Size matters. Eine Gemeinschaftsanleihe würde die Bewältigung der Euro-Krise erleichtern. (von Barbara Schäder)
