Abstract

Introduction. A review of some studies about Latin-America scientific output in Library and Information Science is conducted. This study probes the lack of research on this topic from the perspective of domain analysis. Methods and materials. The main source was periodicals categorized under Information Science & Library Science as found in the Journal Citation Reports (1992-2002). The Social Science Citation Index (1966-2003), online version, was utilized. For subsequent modifications to the downloaded files the Bibexcel program was used. Analysis. The scientific output in this field is analyzed on the SSCI data base, during the period cited above. This analysis presents some bibliometric indicators, such as, co-authorship, output, the most productive departments or institutions. This analysis is a continuation of a previous study on the international visibility of Iberian-American's scientific output. Conclusion. Latin-America's scientific participation in this field is minimal. This is the reason why the most productive countries, generally speaking, in the area are highly regarded. The most productive institution is the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, where the Centro de Informacion Cientifica y Humanistica-CICH as well as the Centro Universitario de Investigaciones Bibliotecologicas-CUIB, are well recognized.
