MAINZ (dpa) Das hebräische Buch ist knapp 250 Jahre alt und handelt von der Kabbala – der Mystik des jüdischen Glaubens. Sorgsam legt Andreas Lehnardt das in Leder gebundene Werk auf seinen Schreibtisch. „Sehen Sie diese handschriftlichen Einträge und Kommentare – sie sind neben dem Buchtext für die Wissenschaft besonders interessant“, erklärt der Mainzer Judaistik-Professor. Seit rund vier Jahren arbeitet er an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität und kümmert sich intensiv um rund 5.500 Bücher, die von zwei jüdischen Gemeinden stammen und wie durch ein Wunder den Zweiten Weltkrieg überstanden haben.

Sie blieb vor dem Regal mit Kinderliteratur stehen. Oh nein, nicht schon wieder dieses Thema. Sie ging weiter und stieß mit einer Bibliothekarin zusammen, die sie hier noch nie gesehen hatte. Ihr rotes Haar stand in wilden Locken wie ein Feuerkranz um ihren Kopf. Erst wollte sie weitergehen, dann bemerkte sie, dass diese sie genau beobachtete. Sie fühlte sich gemüßigt, sie wenigstens mit einem Nicken zu grüßen und sich so für den ungewollten Zusammenstoß zu entschuldigen. Überraschenderweise macht die Bibliothekarin einige Schritte auf sie zu und sagte: "Kommen Sie. Für Sie habe ich heute ein besonderes Buch."

"Wenn ich es von meiner Seite aus betrachte, finde ich es eine Unverschämtheit, dass die Zweigbibliotheken schließen sollen und sogar die Fahrbibliothek wegfallen soll", macht Otto Alfred Holzhausen seinem Ärger Luft. "Wie sollen denn gerade die älteren Menschen so weite Wege bewältigen können wie bis zum Hallmarkt?", fragt er
Die Ausweitung des Bestandes und die damit gewachsene Bedeutung ist doch etwas, das aus Wolfenbüttel nach Europa hinausgestrahlt hat. Sie hatte einen Ruf, indem Casanova hierhergekommen ist: nicht um Liebeshändel zu suchen, sondern um sich eine Woche lang in die Bibliothek zu vertiefen. Das zeigt an, dass die Bibliothek in Europa einen Status hatte.
