Am 21. April fällt der Startschuss für die World Digital Library (WDL). Die WDL will kostenlos kulturell herausragende Dokumente online für jedermann zur Verfügung stellen, darunter Manuskripte, Karten, seltene Bücher, Musik, Tonaufnahmen, Filme, Fotos und Architekturpläne. Die WDL hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, mit diesen Materialien nicht nur das kollektive Gedächtnis der Menschheit zu bewahren, sondern auch das interkulturelle Verständnis zu fördern, ausdrücklich auch für Nationen, die nicht zur westlichen und englischsprechenden Hemisphäre zählen.
Mit einem temperamentvollen Tanz unter rhythmischem Klatschen der Zuschauer eröffneten fünf türkischstämmige Schülerinnen aus sechsten Klassen des Johann-Schöner-Gymnasiums in Karlstadt die Ausstellung zur „Türkischen Bibliothek“ im Gymnasium. Sechs Wochen lang können sich Schüler und Lehrer anhand von 13 Schautafeln einen Überblick über die Literaturgeschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts in dem Land am Bosporus verschaffen.
Die feierliche Zeremonie der Übergabe hat am Mittwoch in der Universitätsbibliothek stattgefunden. Studenten, Dozenten, Slawisten und einfach Interessenten konnten die geschenkten Bücher über die Geschichte Russlands, die Philosophie und Kultur in einer Sonderausstellung sehen.
Hoffmann: Nicht immer ist das Neue das Beste. Kinder brauchen Bücher, die für sie lesbar sind. Man sollte also zu bewährten Klassikern greifen. Außerdem sollten Eltern Bibliotheken nutzen oder sich in guten Buchhandlungen beraten lassen. Kinder brauchen keine eigene Bibliothek, aber sie brauchen ein paar eigene Bücher - die besten, über die sie jederzeit verfügen können.
In Namibia nutzen vor allem Schüler aller Altersstufen die etwa 60 öffentlichen Bibliotheken. Um deren Bestände vor starkem Verschleiß zu schützen, werden die Bücher nun mit Schutzfolie beklebt. Die Neschen AG hatte dafür im letzten Jahr dem Bibliotheks- und Archivdienst Namibia in Windhuk mehr als 10.000 Quadratmeter der Buchschutzfolie „filmolux soft PP“ geschenkt. Mit Neschen-Folien geschützte Bücher haben eine erhöhte Lebensdauer und lassen sich leicht reinigen.
Beleuchtet wird ebenfalls, wie die Kontrolle in den Bibliotheken funktioniert. Dort sind eigens sogenannte Giftschränke, die „Abteilung für spezielle Forschungsliteratur“, kurz „ASF“, eingerichtet. Der Zugang wird streng überwacht. Der spätere Schriftsteller Siegmar Faust verdingt sich in der Leipziger Deutschen Bücherei gar als Nachtwächter, um heimlich seinen Lesehunger auf Verbotenes stillen zu können.
Und so enthält die "Buchstart"-Tasche neben Bilderbüchern und einem Tischset der Lüneburger Malerin Swantje Crone auch Infos über Bibliotheken sowie eine Elternbroschüre in verschiedenen Sprachen, die Müttern und Vätern Anleitungen zum Vorlesen gibt.
Alsdorf. Dass es in ihrem Lieblingsbuch recht gruselig zugeht, hat die vierjährige Felicia noch gar nicht bemerkt. Lesen kann die Kleine schließlich noch nicht. Sie mag es einfach, die großen Bilder zu betrachten. Vergnügt sitzt sie da, die Beinchen angezogen, ihre Schuhe liegen vor dem weichen Ohrensessel in der Alsdorfer Stadtbücherei. Was da passiert, ist eine Bindung.
Bremen/dpa. Einmal die Woche geht Harald in die Bibliothek. In aller Ruhe wühlt er durch den Katalog mit den CDs, trifft eine Auswahl und lässt diese vom Bibliothekar auf seiner Kundenkarte vermerken. Danach schaut er noch kurz in der Comic-Abteilung vorbei. «Die ist gut ausgestattet», schwärmt Harald. Auch die langen Regale mit den Büchern lassen kaum einen Wunsch unerfüllt: Der neue Roman von Ken Follett ist hier genauso zu finden wie Alice Schwarzers Biografie, Kochbücher und Zeitschriften für Aquariumliebhaber. Eigentlich normal, müsste man meinen. Doch in Haralds Bücherei ist so einiges anders und nichts selbstverständlich. Sie befindet sich nämlich hinter Gittern.
Sie sind nicht einfach zu finden, die unabhängigen Bibliotheken in Cuba. Kein Stadtführer erwähnt sie, kein Schild weist auf sie hin. Denn eigentlich sind sie illegal oder besser gesagt: nicht erlaubt. Und sie erhalten auch keine Genehmigung vom Staat, dem einzigen Lizenzgeber im Land, "weil sie die bibliothekarischen Normen verletzen" - wie die Behörden verlauten lassen, wenn sie mal wieder eine verbieten.
„Ich gehe an den Regalen in der Bibliothek vorbei. Die Bücher kehren mir den Rücken zu. Nicht wie Menschen, um mich abzuweisen, sondern einladend, um sich vorzustellen.“ Dieses Zitat von Simen Skjønsberg beschreibt einen Bücherwurm, wie es ihn auch in Pfatters kleiner Bibliothek gibt.
In Büchern: Beim Schmökern in einem seiner vielen Bücher flog einem Freiburger Bibliothekar eine 100 DM-Banknote entgegen. Dabei fiel ihm ein, dass er einst 2.000 Mark in seiner Lektüre versteckt hatte. Er konnte sich (bisher) aber nicht daran erinnern, nach welchem System er die Scheine verteilt hatte, so die Bundesbank.
Doch hängt über Bertrams Zukunft inzwischen ebenfalls ein großes Fragezeichen. Noch hat sich Deloitte nicht öffentlich geäußert, aber der Verkauf des Unternehmens, das auch viele Bibliotheken mit Literatur versorgt, ist so gut wie sicher.
Wie die "Daily Record" nun berichtete, wurden letztes Jahr fast 37.000 Bücher aus schottischen Bibliotheken gestohlen - und die Harry-Potter-Saga steht ganz oben auf der Liste.
Bislang schien es so, als hätte sich das Buch aus der digitalen Revolution heraushalten können. Der Vertrieb von Inhalten über das Internet, der die Musikbranche wie ein Hurrikan durchgerüttelt hat, schien das Geschäft mit Gedrucktem vergleichsweise wenig zu berühren. Doch nun soll das anders werden:
