Jacques Rancière zeichnet die Philosophie der intellektuellen Emanzipation nach und präsentiert sie unserer pädagogisierten und ungleichheitlichen Gesellschaft.1818 begann Joseph Jacotot, exilierter Revolutionär und Lektor für französische Literatur an der Universität Löwen, Panik im gelehrten Europa zu verbreiten. Nicht damit zufrieden, flämischen Studenten Französisch beigebracht, ohne ihnen eine einzige Lektion gegeben zu haben, lehrte er, worüber er unwissend war und proklamierte die Losung der intellektuellen Emanzipation: Alle Menschen haben die gleiche Intelligenz. Es handelt sich hierbei nicht um amüsante Pädagogik, sondern um Philosophie und, wenn man will, um Politik. Die Vernunft lebt nur von der Gleichheit. Die soziale Fiktion jedoch lebt nur von Rängen und ihrer unaufhörlichen Rechtfertigung. Die große Lektion von Jacotot ist, dass die Bildung wie die Freiheit ist: Sie wird nicht verliehen, sondern genommen. Sie wird den Monopolisten der Intelligenz, die auf dem Erklärthron sitzen, entrissen. Es genügt, sich selbst zu erkennen und in jedem anderen sprechenden Wesen dieselbe Fähigkeit anzuerkennen..
