Open access. There is a concern that traditional instruction based methods of learning do not adequately prepare students for the challenges of physical therapy practice. Self-directed learning is considered to be the most appropriate educational approach to enhance life-long learning as it enhances self-efficacy. This study compares outcomes in two educational approaches: self-directed learning (SDL), and traditional instruction based learning (IBL).
Open access. Understanding students’ learning styles, and modifying teaching styles and material accordingly, is an essential to delivering quality education. Knowing more about the learning styles of physiotherapy learners will assist educators’ planning and delivering of learning activities. The purpose of this scoping review was to explore what is published about physiotherapy learning styles.

Journal clubs (JC) may increase clinicians’ evidence-based practice (EBP) skills and facilitate evidence uptake in clinical practice, however there is a lack of research into their effectiveness in allied health. We investigated the effectiveness of a structured JC that is Tailored According to Research Evidence And Theory (TREAT) in improving EBP skills and practice compared to a standard JC format for allied health professionals. Concurrently, we explored the feasibility of implementing TREAT JCs in a healthcare setting, by evaluating participating clinicians’ perceptions and satisfaction.
Research training programmes are a knowledge translation (KT) intervention which aim to improve research evidence uptake by clinicians. Whilst KT training programmes have been reported to significantly improve evidence uptake by physiotherapists, it is unclear which aspects of training optimally assist KT into physiotherapy practice. The purpose of the review was to establish the body of evidence regarding KT training programmes to improve physiotherapists’ use of evidence-based practice (EBP) and clinical practice guidelines (CPG).
Following a successful bid for HEE funding in 2015-2016, a physiotherapist simulation fellow was appointed.
With support from Health Education England and RUH simulation experts, the physiotherapist has gained valuable knowledge and skills.
Even though the fellowship has finished, the Head of Therapies at the RUH continues to support the same physiotherapist to deliver one day per week of simulation alongside their Band 7 clinical role.

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) has today published its continuing professional development (CPD) audit report for the period 2013-2015.
The report shows that in this period 8,164 registrants, across all 16 professions regulated by the HCPC, were randomly selected to submit CPD profiles. Nearly 81% of these met the CPD standards with most accepted after their first assessment.
As with previous audits, the majority of registrants invited to submit a profile engaged with the CPD process. A small minority sought voluntary deregistration (4.8%) or did not renew (3.2%). Some registrants deferred their audit (10.7%) with the most common reasons being on maternity leave or health issues.
