The Elsevier Grand Challenge: Knowledge Enhancement in the Life Sciences is a contest created to improve the way scientific information is communicated and used. The contest invites members of the scientific community to describe and prototype a tool to improve the interpretation and identification of meaning in (online) journals and text databases relating to the life sciences. Specifically we are looking for new ways to:
Why Dog Food?!
The call to "eat your own dog-food" is often heard in the Semantic Web research area. The motto encourages us to use the languages and tools that we are developing to support our own work and demonstrate convincing arguments for the introduction of explicit semantics.
The International Semantic Web and European Semantic Web Conference series have followed this maxim and published metadata describing the events. This metadata covers information about papers, schedules, attendees etc. Tools can then consume this information and provide services, such as intelligent scheduling or search, to conference attendees.
The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative is an open organization engaged in the development of interoperable online metadata standards that support a broad range of purposes and business models. DCMI's activities include work on architecture and modeling, discussions and collaborative work in DCMI Communities and DCMI Task Groups, annual conferences and workshops, standards liaison, and educational efforts to promote widespread acceptance of metadata standards and practices.
This document is designed as being a simple but comprehensive introductory publication for anybody trying to get into the Semantic Web: from beginners through to long time hackers.
Data on the Semantic Web is semi-structured and does not follow one fixed schema. Faceted browsing is a natural technique for navigating such data, partitioning the information space into orthogonal conceptual dimensions. Current faceted interfaces are ma
This report surveys the state of semantic web storage for RDF / triple data using existing free software tools. It takes a practical approach by targeting the work to the needs of developers, answering frequently asked questions related to this subject. The report first reviews previous work in surveying semantic web data, schema and triple stores, then gives an overview of the major systems with their feature set and maturity and then uses that information to provide a set of FAQs with answers related to storing semantic web data.
Metaweb holds the promise of all connected humankind weaving a tapestry of connections that more and more of us will be able to stand back and say, "Hmmm....I see a pattern here" and thus be able to invent ever higher value, solve deeper and more profound
With due respect, I think you, and even more aggresiously Clay Shirkey, have been misrepresenting what the Semantic Web is, and critiquing based on that misunderstanding, not on the reality. Folks like Danny Hillis and Nova Spivack who were listening got
