Am 21. April fällt der Startschuss für die World Digital Library (WDL). Die WDL will kostenlos kulturell herausragende Dokumente online für jedermann zur Verfügung stellen, darunter Manuskripte, Karten, seltene Bücher, Musik, Tonaufnahmen, Filme, Fotos und Architekturpläne. Die WDL hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, mit diesen Materialien nicht nur das kollektive Gedächtnis der Menschheit zu bewahren, sondern auch das interkulturelle Verständnis zu fördern, ausdrücklich auch für Nationen, die nicht zur westlichen und englischsprechenden Hemisphäre zählen.

Welche Funktionen müssen Bibliotheken der Zukunft erfüllen? Haben Bibliotheken gegen die Google Buchsuche oder die aggressive Verkaufspolitik der Verlage überhaupt eine Chance? Ist eine Kooperation von staatlich finanzierten Bibliotheken und kommerziellen Informationsanbietern unausweichlich? Auf dem Podiumsgespräch anlässlich des 90. Geburtstages der Deutschen Zentralbibliothek für Wirtschaftswissenschaften - Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft diskutierten am vergangenen Sonntag Forscher, Google und Wikipedia zentrale Fragen rund um die Informationsbeschaffung im 21. Jahrhundert.
Wahrscheinlich träumt jeder Wissenschaftler mit kleinem Geldbeutel davon, nicht mehr durch die Archive und Bibliotheken halb Europas reisen zu müssen, um die notwendigen Dokumente und Bücher für seine Forschung zu finden. Von heute an könnte dieser Traum wahr werden: Die europäische digitale Bibliothek Europeana geht online.
Daher müssten alle Ausgaben genau geprüft werden. Neue Bücher für Bibliotheken könnten nicht finanziert werden. Musik- und Volkshochschule bekommen weniger Honorarmittel.
Auf den Balearen gibt es 176 Stadtbüchereien, Bibliotheken und Archive mit über eine halben Million Bücher in den Regalen. Darunter ist auch ein kleiner Bestand deutschsprachiger Literatur.

Marion Neumann jedenfalls kann kaum einen Unterschied zu anderen Jahreszeiten feststellen. „Ich hab am Dienstag 180 Romane ausgeliehen“, berichtet sie.
