April 2009 Bundesjustizministerin Brigitte Zypries unterstützt die Kritik der 1.300 Verleger und Autoren an den Methoden des Suchmaschinenunternehmens Google im „Heidelberger Appell“. „Den Unmut der Verleger und Autoren über die Vorgehensweise von Google kann ich gut nachvollziehen. Das Verhalten von Google, Bücher in großem Umfang ohne Einwilligung der Rechtsinhaber zu digitalisieren und zu veröffentlichen und erst danach über Vergütungen zu verhandeln, ist nicht akzeptabel.
Google digitalisiert das Wissen der Welt. Wer dagegen protestiert, gilt als Spielverderber. Autoren und Verleger in Deutschland und den USA bekommen das zu spüren.
Mehrere Verleger und Autoren haben sich jetzt in einem öffentlichen Appell gegen die Digitalisierungspraxis von Google gewandt. Die Unterzeichner appellieren an "die Bundesregierung und die Regierungen der Länder, das bestehende Urheberrecht, die Publikationsfreiheit und die Freiheit von Forschung und Lehre entschlossen und mit allen zu Gebote stehenden Mitteln zu verteidigen".
Der Kampf ums Urheberrecht ist nun auch in Deutschland voll entbrannt. Und das ist gut so. Denn seit GoogleBooks vor fünf Jahren damit begann, die Bestände US-amerikanischer Bibliotheken zu digitalisieren, herrscht große Verunsicherung, insbesondere unter Autoren und Verlegern. Die große Streitfrage ist: Garantieren Unternehmen wie GoogleBooks künftig über das Internet den freien Zugang zum Weltwissen oder enteignen Monopolkonzerne derzeit vor allem dreist die geistigen Urheber und Produzenten?
Derzeit empören sich Verleger und Autoren gegen Google Books, Open Access und sonstige Innovationen im Publikationswesen. Losgetreten hat den Entrüstungssturm der Heidelberger Literaturwissenschaftler Roland Reuß mit dem Kampfruf "Enteignet die schamlosen Enteigner!"

Eher wirkt das Tableau wie ein Rückzugsgefecht; versprengte Truppen stemmen sich gegen die Übermacht aus Kalifornien. Ihr Name: Google. Google regiert wie kein zweites Unternehmen über die normative Kraft des Faktischen. Unbeirrt schreitet die Firma voran auf ihrem Weg, das Weltwissen verfügbar zu machen. Dabei geht es nicht nur ums große Geld, sondern auch selten mit ganz legalen Mitteln zu - wie bei großen Eroberungszügen nicht anders zu erwarten.
Google scannt weltweit Bücher und verärgert damit Verlage und Autoren. In den USA haben sich die Parteien geeinigt. In Deutschland fühlen sich die Publizisten übergangen
Hier ist ein Vorschlag, der zur größten Bibliothek der Welt führen könnte. Es wäre eine digitale Bibliothek, aber sie könnte die Library of Congress und alle nationalen Bibliotheken Europas in den Schatten stellen. Mehr noch, wenn die Bedingungen der Vereinbarungen auf weitere Autoren und Verleger ausgedehnt werden, könnte Google das größte Buchunternehmen der Welt werden, keine Kette von Läden, sondern ein elektronischer Bereitstellungsservice." Was aber, wenn Google seinen Service eines Tages nicht nur kostenpflichtig, sondern richtig teuer macht?
Im Streit um die Digitalisierung von Millionen Büchern gehen deutsche Verlage, Autoren und die Verwertungsgesellschaft VG Wort auf Konfrontation zum Internetkonzern Google.
20. Januar 2009 Google bekommt bei seinen hochfliegenden Plänen zur „Buchsuche“ im Internet Gegenwind aus Deutschland. Die VG Wort, der Verband deutscher Schriftsteller und der Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels kündigen ein gemeinsames Vorgehen gegen die ungenehmigte Digitalisierung von Büchern in den Vereinigten Staaten an.
Deutsche Autoren und Verlage wappnen sich gegen den Suchmaschinenbetreiber Google. "Wir wollen erreichen, dass kein deutscher Autor und Verlag Rechte verliert", kündigte der Geschäftsführer der Verwertungsgesellschaft (VG) Wort, Robert Staats, heute laut Mitteilung (PDF-Datei) in Berlin an. Google wolle dieser Tage in Anzeigen in deutschsprachigen Zeitungen über sein weiteres Vorgehen informieren, informiert der Deutsche Kulturrat.
