Es gibt zwei Sorten Bibliothekare - die Hilfsbereiten und die anderen, die unermüdlich damit beschäftigt sind, den Feind abzuwehren. Die so viele Bücher wie möglich unter fadenscheinigen Argumenten aus dem Leihverkehr ziehen und am besten in Schränke verschließen, die jeden Abend heilfroh sind, wenn sie endlich die Türen verriegeln dürfen, damit ihre Schätzchen wenigstens bis zum nächsten Morgen Ruhe haben vor diesem alles betatschenden, alles durcheinanderbringenden Geschmeiß mit fettigen, ungeschickten Händen.
Die von der EU geförderte digitale Online-Bibliothek "Europeana" ist gleich zu ihrem offiziellen Startschuss an übergroßem Interesse gescheitert. Eigentlich sollten Internetnutzer über www.europeana.eu in allen Sprachen Zugriff auf mehr als zwei Millionen Bücher, Landkarten, Fotografien, Archivdokumente und Filme aus Bibliotheken und Kulturinstituten aller 27 EU-Staaten erhalten.
Die Websites heißen eAusleihe, Onleihe oder eMedien – sie belegen, dass viele Bibliotheken längst den Schritt in die digitale Medienwelt vollzogen haben: 46 öffentliche Büchereien in Deutschland bieten bereits die Ausleihe im Internet an. Öffnungszeiten und Mahngebühren sind hier Vergangenheit.
