Editorial. Anxiety and affective symptoms are prominent features of schizophrenia which are often present in the prodromal phase of the illness and preceding psychotic relapses. A number of studies suggest that genetic risk for the disorder may be associated with increased anxiety long before the onset of psychotic symptoms. Although suicidal ideation and suicide attempts are quite common, the rate of death by suicide in the community is only about one in 10 000 per annum. A method that could identify a substantial proportion of future suicides without too many false positives would provide a useful focus for suicide prevention strategies and communication with patients and their families.

Editorial. Negative public attitudes towards psychiatry hinder individuals coming for treatment and prevent us from attracting and retaining the very brightest and best doctors. As psychiatrists we are skilled in using science to change the thoughts and behaviours of individuals, however, we lack the skills to engage entire populations. Expertise in this field is the preserve of branding, advertising and marketing professionals. Techniques from these fields can be used to rebrand psychiatry at a variety of levels from national recruitment drives to individual clinical interactions between psychiatrists and their patients. comment. The premature mortality of people with mental disorders is well established, but achieving an understanding of this problem has proved difficult. Drawing on the remarkable Danish case register system, Erlangsen and colleagues1 report on the excess mortality of people with mental disorders in Denmark over a 20 year period, from 1995 to 2014. In their study, people with mental disorders were defined as all people who had been diagnosed with a mental disorder during psychiatric hospitalisation or outpatient treatment. People with mental disorders have higher mortality rates than the general population and more detailed estimates of mortality differences are needed to address this public health issue. We aimed to assess whether differences in cause-specific mortality between people with and without mental disorders have changed between 1995 and 2014 by quantifying life-years lost and assessing differences over time.
