Nachdem Kanada CETA am 17. Mai ratifiziert hat, kann das Freihandelsabkommen in den nächsten Wochen provisorisch in Kraft treten. Dadurch wird allerdings auch Emmanuel Macrons Versprechen, ein Expertenausschuss über die Auswirkungen des Abkommens aufzustellen, gefährdet.
In Freihandelsverhandlungen stellt sich die EU gerne als der Partner dar, der soziale Rechte in den Verträgen verankert. Bei Ceta scheint es aber umgekehrt zu sein: Kanada will etwas für Arbeitnehmer tun, Brüssel bremst.
Die Opposition forderte am Donnerstag gleich zwei Debatten über das EU-Kanada-Handelsabkommen CETA im Nationalrat ein. Das Abkommen ist längst zum innenpolitischen Spielball verkommen. Dass Österreichs Parteien dieser Versuchung nicht widerstehen, wird noch zum demokratiepolitischen Bumerang.

Bulgarien und Rumänien drohen gegen zu Ceta stimmen, weil Kanada die Visa-Anforderungen für ihre Bürger nicht lockert. Vertreter der Länder, der EU-Kommission und Kanadas trafen sich in Brüssel, um ein mögliches Veto zu verhindern.
