Das Nationallabor für erneuerbare Energien (NREL), eine Abteilung des US-Energieministeriums, beginnt in diesen Tagen mit Tests eines neuen Katalysematerials des Chemieriesen Dow Chemical, das die Ethanol-Produktion aus stark zellulosehaltiger Biomasse deutlich vereinfachen soll. Die Partnerschaft könnte einen thermochemischen Prozess hervorbringen, mit dem sich aus Holz- und Maisabfällen problemlos Biotreibstoffe herstellen lässt. Das NREL will die Dow-Technik nutzen, um aus Syngas, einer Mischung aus Wasserstoff und Kohlendioxid, die bei der Vergasung von Biomasse entsteht, mehrere Alkohole zu machen, darunter auch das in Fahrzeugen nutzbare Ethanol. Geplant sind laut Vertrag der Aufbau einer Pilotanlage sowie eine Untersuchung, ob sich die Technik tatsächlich für die Industrieproduktion eignet, berichtet das Technologiemagazin Technology Review in seiner Online-Ausgabe.
