Communicating effectively, interprofessionally and with adults with intellectual disabilities, and relevant support staff are vital components of person-centred communication assessments. Essentially, registered nurses in intellectual disability (RNIDs) – the term used in Ireland –and speech and language therapists (SLTs) need to work well together. This article describes communication assessment tools used with and for adults with intellectual disabilities, and discusses the skills and expertise inherent in the role of RNIDs and SLTs when supporting comprehensive holistic communication assessments. Eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties can have serious outcomes for children and adults with learning disabilities. Carers must adhere to management guidelines about mealtime support, and multidisciplinary teams must ensure this happens. A one-page point of care tool summarising the guidelines for a specific client, sometimes termed a ‘mealtime advice mat’ (MAM), is one method. The aim of this study was to determine whether MAMs are used in special schools, gain an understanding of their format and use and identify other methods of supporting adherence such as training.

It aims to make sure they get the care and treatment they need for the developmental and clinical comorbidities associated with cerebral palsy, so that they can be as active and independent as possible.
A new online resource AHPs into Action: Using AHPs to transform health, care and wellbeing has been launched. The resource contains contributions from over 16,000 individuals across healthcare and the public during 2016.
The event concluded that there was potential for AHPs to co-create a vision of how, with collective action, England will be different if all AHPs were used effectively in the health, social and wider care system.

Dysphagia is a condition in which patients have difficulty with some or all parts of the swallowing process. It can lead to penetration of food or drink into the larynx, which can cause aspiration. The prevalence varies but it is thought that 10% of acutely hospitalised elderly patients suffer from dysphagia. There are both obvious and less obvious indicators. Dysphagia is caused by a variety of conditions and can be short term or long term. It affects the patient physically, psychologically and socially. Because nurses spend the most time with patients, they are often the first ones to identify a problem. Therefore, it is sensible for nurses to be trained in how to screen patients for swallowing problems. They can then be referred to speech and language therapists for a formal and thorough assessment. Background
No instruments, to our knowledge, exist to assess leadership competency in existing and emerging allied health professional (AHP) leaders. This paper describes the development and preliminary exploration of the psychometric properties of a leadership competency instrument for existing and emerging AHP leaders and examines (i) its factor structure, (ii) its convergent validity with the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), and (iii) its discriminative validity in AHPs with different grades.
