Abstract
Although the Assessment of Basic Learning Abilities (ABLA) test has proven to be a valuable tool for teachers of persons with developmental disabilities, all of the research to date has been conducted by university students and their supervisors. In order to facilitate use of the ABLA test by direct-care staff, L. DeWiele and G. L. Martin (1998) prepared a self-instructional manual (S-IM) on the ABLA test. This paper describes 2 studies conducted to field test the S-IM. Collectively, the studies indicate that the S-IM is considerably more effective and efficient than the original description of the ABLA for teaching the ABLA to undergraduate students, and that direct-care staff can reliably apply the ABLA test after approximately 6 hrs of study and practice using the S-IM.
