There are a number of recent studies that demonstrate dementia as being preventable in around 30% of all cases, through the control of modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, alcohol consumption, high blood pressure and smoking (e.g. Livingston et al, 2017). Frankish and Horton (2017) estimate that delaying the onset of dementia by just 1 year could reduce its prevalence by 11% by 2050. A Lancet report on the risk factors of dementia stated that hearing loss in midlife is the highest modifiable risk factor for the later onset of dementia (Livingston et al, 2017). The report is welcomed as a reminder that managing hearing loss earlier could hold back this contributing factor to dementia in later life. Although many studies explored the relationship between executive functions (EF) and activities of daily living (ADLs) in cognitive disorders, previous studies used measurements without well‐defined levels of ADLs. This study explored the relationship between EF and the threefold classification of everyday functioning; basic or b‐, instrumental or i‐, and advanced or a‐ADLs, and examined how EF account for the variance in this triad of everyday functioning.. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but little prospective evidence exists on the effects of OSA treatment in preclinical AD. The objective was to determine if continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment adherence, controlling for baseline differences, predicts cognitive and everyday function after 1 year in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to determine effect sizes for a larger trial.. Modifiable lifestyle risk factors are of great interest in the prevention and management of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Loneliness and social networks may influence onset of AD, but little is known about this relationship in people with AD. The current study aimed to explore the relationship between loneliness and social networks (social measures) and cognitive and psychopathology decline (AD outcomes) in people with AD.. People should look out for signs of depression and dementia among older family members and friends over Christmas, NHS England expert Professor Alistair Burns urged today.
Problems that may have been hidden can come to the surface or be easier to spot as families or friends get together over the festive season, Prof Burns said.
Depression should not be written off as inevitable in old age and can be treated effectively. Emotional changes can also be the first indication that someone has dementia.
