Editorial. Recent high-profile cases have highlighted the difficulties that professionals caring for terminally ill or technology dependent children face.
I am a paediatrician. I see children with severe problems, often chronic and frequently without a cure, and I try as far as possible to help them and their families. Occasionally there is science and evidence behind the decisions we make, but not always....... To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Comment. Child development and mental health are complex interwoven processes influenced by biological, environmental, and cultural factors. This interrelationship can change with time, necessitating adjustment of the use and availability of health resources. To know which adjustments are necessary, . Different domain-specific and domain-general cognitive precursors play a key role in the development of mathematical abilities. The contribution of these domains to mathematical ability changes during development. Primary school-aged children who show mathematical difficulties form a heterogeneous group, but it is not clear whether this also holds for preschool low achievers (LAs) and how domain-specific and domain-general abilities contribute to mathematical difficulties at a young age. The aim of this study was to explore the cognitive characteristics of a sample of preschool LAs and identify sub-types of LAs.. The purpose of this systematic review was to provide an up-to-date global overview of the separate prevalences of motor and cognitive delays and cerebral palsy (CP) in very preterm (VPT) and very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants.. Coeliac disease might affect school performance due to its effect on cognitive performance and related health consequences that might increase school absenteeism. The aim of this study was to investigate whether children with coeliac disease performed differently on completion of ninth grade in school compared with children without coeliac disease based on a population in Sweden.. First they were dismissed as ‘clumsy children’, then we called them ‘dyspraxic’, now the preferred terminology is developmental coordination disorder (DCD). We see children with these problems frequently, but are they just one end of a spectrum of normality, or do they have a definable neuropathological condition?........ Letter. In November 2017’s issue of Archives there were a number of articles addressing the important area of the clinical approach to children with developmental delay. The investigations performed are very variable across the UK and this is a key area where the clinical and cost-effectiveness of every laboratory investigation needs to be further evaluated. Hart et al1 suggest a very limited metabolic screen for children with developmental delay without additional features, whereas Mithyantha et al2 suggest more extensive metabolic screening.
We cannot agree with the very limited metabolic screen proposed by Hart et al1 for children with developmental delay without additional features............ To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
DNA methylation has been proposed as an epigenetic mechanism by which early-life experiences become “embedded” in the genome and alter transcriptional processes to compromise health. The authors sought to investigate whether early-life victimization stress is associated with genome-wide DNA methylation.. We usually think of anorexia nervosa (AN) and other eating disorders (ED) as primarily psychological conditions. However there is a surprising amount of evidence suggesting that autoimmunity has something to do with it. Some autoantibodies can have a direct effect on brain neurons causing obvious behavioural disorders, as a seen in PANDAS (paediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections): indeed some PANDAS-type cases have been reported to have acute-onset anorexia. Two large population based studies from Scandinavia throw some light on this puzzling association.. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.
Research examining the quality of life (QoL) of children with severe developmental disabilities (SDD) is limited. The present study examines parent perceptions of child QoL in children with SDD compared with typically developing (TD) children and then examines predictors of QoL for the SDD group.. Executive function impairments have been identified in children with poor motor skills, with and without a diagnosis of developmental coordination disorder (DCD). However, most studies are cross-sectional. This study investigates the development of executive function in children with poor motor skills over 2 years. . Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD) are heritable disorders with similarities in clinical symptoms and typical onset after puberty.1 While research shows that impaired motor coordination can have an association with schizophrenia,2 there are limited data on childhood development preceding BD. Murray et al1 proposed a developmental model for similarities and dissimilarities between schizophrenia and BD, but it remains unknown if dissimilarities exist in early infancy and if they covary with genetic liability for these disorders. Using polygenic risk scores (PRSs), we explored whether genetic risk for schizophrenia and genetic risk for BD are associated with neuromotor development in infancy.. This study expands on earlier analyses of the data generated by a cross-sectional study involving a random sample of 5149 middle-school students with a mean age of 14.5 years from four EU-countries (Austria, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain), in which every fourth respondent (23.0%) had been physically abused by his or her parents and almost every sixth respondent (17.3%) had witnessed physical spousal abuse. Contrary to expectations, some of these youths reported no engagement in peer violence and no symptoms of depression, which meant that they could be considered “resilient.”. The purpose of this study is to identify the developmental trajectories of peer attachment, self-esteem, depression, and child maltreatment, and to understand the longitudinal mediation effects that peer attachment and self-esteem have on the influence of perceived abuse on early adolescent depression.. An estimated 11% of births occur preterm, and survival is improving. Early studies suggested an association between preterm birth and earlier puberty. Given the adverse outcomes associated with early puberty this could have significant public health implications.
The objective of this review was to assess the timing of puberty after preterm birth.
