Open access. There are more displaced people around the world than ever before, and over half are children. Australia and other wealthy nations have implemented increasingly harsh policies, justified as ‘humane deterrence’, and aimed at preventing asylum seekers (persons without preestablished resettlement visas) from entering their borders and gaining protection. Australian psychiatrists and other health professionals have documented the impact of these harsh policies since their inception. Their experience in identifying and challenging the effects of these policies on the mental health of asylum seekers may prove instructive to others facing similar issues.

The Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill was introduced to the House of Lords on Tuesday 3 July and seeks to replace the current system known as ‘Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards’ (DoLs).
DoLs is an assessment currently carried out on people who do not have the mental capacity to make their own decisions about their care, for example because they are living with dementia. It was criticised by a 2017 Law Commission review for being too complex and bureaucratic.
The government has now developed a new system, known as ‘Liberty Protection Safeguards’, which will become law through the bill.
The author discusses a research project in 2015 that aims to gauge the effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT) with adult women who had been trafficked into the sex industry. Study highlights include the therapeutic model used in the project, collection of qualitative data via verbal feedback from participants, and the significance of TF-CBT to clients in working through their trauma.. In the study, the frequency and nature of asylum seekers’ psychiatric diagnoses in a German admission center were examined. Additional aims were to identify changes in those diagnoses over time and to investigate health care utilization of mentally ill asylum seekers in the community.

The Safeguarding Adults – Preventing Abuse in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Event, held at Oakengates Theatre Telford, was jointly led by Keeping Adults Safe in Shropshire Board (KASiSB) and Telford & Wrekin Safeguarding Adults Board (TWSAB) with support from Shropshire Partners in Care to promote the importance of preventing abuse of all adults with care and support needs.
