Despite an obvious and growing need, there has historically been scant provision of social care and social work in prisons. Thus, although the 2014 Care Act gave local authorities in England responsibility for identifying, assessing and meeting adult prisoners’ social care needs, little was known about the number of prisoners eligible for support, the extent of their needs or how best to meet them. Against this background, this paper reports the findings of two national surveys of local authority managers undertaken in 2016 which found that upwards of 1,800 prisoners with social care needs were identified in the first year, of whom almost 1,600 received an assessment and approaching 800 were deemed eligible for the provision of care and support. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.

The Understanding Research Evidence (URE) videos use plain language, cartoon visuals, and public health examples to explain complex research concepts. The videos are posted on the NCCMT website and YouTube channel.
Conclusions: The results indicate that offering patients optional videoconferencing may prevent premature dropouts from treatment and prolong treatment courses. However, the small sample size precludes conclusions regarding the effect of the intervention, which was not detectable in the patients’ use of alcohol and severity of problems.
Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that there is substantial interest among expectant and new fathers for using Internet-delivered strategies to prepare for the transition to parenthood and support their mental health. Specific user and website features were identified to optimize the use of father-focused websites.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that engagement with self-harm online support communities may confer a range of therapeutic benefits for some users, which may serve to minimize the psychosocial burden of self-harm and promote positive coping strategies. In addition, the online nature of the support available may be helpful to those who are unable to access face-to-face support.

The interface between mental health services and the criminal justice system presents challenges both for professionals and patients. Both systems are stressed and inherently complex. Section 136 of the Mental Health Act is unusual being both an aspect of the Mental Health Act and a power of arrest. More recently, Section 136 has had a public profile stemming from the use of police cells as places of safety for young, mentally disturbed individuals. This paper explores the current state of health of this piece of legislation. To read the full article, log in using your NHS OpenAthens details.

Editorial The apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE4) allele is the most potent genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD) and female sex is associated with increased risk. In both sexes, carriers of the APOE4 allele harbor a dose-dependent increase in risk of AD development, compared with those with the neutral APOE3 or protective APOE2. We understand the APOE4 risk to be greater in women, and our current dogma raises several questions. Is female vulnerability to APOE4 a robust association in AD? If so, what mechanisms underlie the sex difference? Most importantly, is this sex difference of real consequence to human health?
