Journal of the Research Center for Educational Technology 4 (2008) This paper briefly summarizes the implementation of a university-wide electronic portfolio requirement. We begin with a systemic view of the ePortfolio Program and narrow our focus to a view of ePortfolio integration into two different classes. The rationale behind the Clemson University ePortfolio Program is to build a mechanism through which core competencies are demonstrated and evaluated. The target classes are a general education English class focusing on 20th and 21st century literature and a professional development seminar in computer science. Both classes allow students to select their topics and present their work to the class using a variety of media types, and both include a form of peer evaluation. These classes confirm that when students’ choice is built into the assignments we are pleasantly surprised by the outcomes.
Feedback on academic performance is of critical importance to students’ learning, and in their perception of the quality of instruction they receive. Here we report the outcomes of a study comparing the views and expectations of first year biological science undergraduate students and academic staff regarding feedback provision and utilisation. The results indicate that while students and staff are generally satisfied with the feedback process, there are some tensions generated by perceived differences in desired academic outcomes. In particular, these tensions focus on perceptions of inconsistency in the feedback processes and in the use made of feedback to inform future practice.

Reflection is hard. Guidance is required in the design of reflective questions (by course teams), the writing of reflective accounts (by students) and the marking of assessments (by tutors). Reflective skills need to be built up gradually. It takes time to get used to the new ways of thinking required. It is necessary to situate reflection in the course and relate it to the students’ practice. Reasons for introducing reflection to students must be made clear up front.
David Wiley taught an online course at Utah State University last fall and let anyone fully participate, even if they weren’t enrolled. In the end, five people the registrar had never heard of joined discussions with the 15 or so regular students and got papers graded by Mr. Wiley, who considered the extra work a public service.
Characteristics of effective teams lists them as having: * Clear objectives * Good decision-making processes * Trust, co-operation and constructive dissent * Clear roles, responsibilities and leadership * Sound relationships with other groups * Analysis of the team’s performance Questions to reflect on: 1. Which of these characteristics are present in my team of e-tutors? 2. If some of these characteristics are not in place, what are the consequences for our performance? 3. What can I do to introduce or strengthen the characteristics?
Edmodo is a microblogging platform and communications tool for use by teachers and students in the classroom. Edmodo provides teachers and students the ability to share notes, links, and files to foster communication inside and outside of the classroom. Teachers also have the ability to post alerts, assignments, and events to share with their students. You may upload any file of 100mb or less to Edmodo. We currently do not render the videos to flash. We strongly encourage users to use an external video sharing service such as Youtube, Vimeo, or Blip.tv and post the embed codes using our link posting feature.

I was once a supporter of the research assessment exercise, but in the long-term it has created an obsession with performance, resulting in many universities no longer appointing faculty on teaching ability.

While early use could be described as mainly for fun, IM today is a serious communication medium. Remarkably, it seems that educational institutions have been doing very little with it, while several studies indicate that it could indeed be a valuable too
