Kommunikationswissenschaftler Jan Schmidt vom Hans-Bredow-Institut in Hamburg wird den US-amerikanischen Blogosphären-Erforscher John Kelly dabei unterstützen, eine Karte der deutschen Blogosphäre zu erstellen. Kelly versucht über verschiedene Teilprojekte die globale Blogosphäre zu kartieren – eines der ersten Projekte war die Bestandsaufnahme der iranischen Blogosphäre.
John Kelly ist Gründer von Morningside Analytics und Partner des Democracy & Internet Project am Berkman Center for Internet & Society an der Harvard University. Für seine Dissertation erstellte er eine Spider-Software für Blogs. Sie folgt allen Links, die von einem Blog ausgehen. Daraus errechnet sie die Nähe einzelner Blogs zueinander und gewichtet sie über die Anzahl der Links. Der Berliner Netzaktivist Markus Beckedahl sah sich bei John Kelly die ersten Versionen der deutschen Blogosphären-Karte an und vermittelte daraufhin eine Zusammenarbeit mit Jan Schmidt.
