Bob Sutor, als Vizepräsident bei IBM für Standards und Open Source zuständig, hat anlässlich des nun zehn Jahre dauernden Engagements seines Unternehmen für freie und offene Software Prognosen für die kommenden zehn Jahre abgegeben. In seinem Vortrag (PDF-Datei) auf der LinuxWorld in San Francisco ging er davon aus, dass die Nutzung des Betriebssystems Linux weiter zunehmen werde. Es werde in den kommenden zehn Jahren dazu keine Alternative auf dem Open-Source-Feld geben, glaubt Sutor; dabei werde die Konzentration auf x86-Prozessoren weiter abnehmen.

Als PDF verfügbare Textfassungen der kürzlich auf dem OLS präsentierten Vorträge bieten allerlei Hintergründe zu aktuellen oder zukünftigen Entwicklungen rund um den Linux-Kernel. Am Linux-Kernel und dessen Umfeld interessierte Anwender finden darin etwa einen guter Überblick zum Entwicklungsstand des WLAN-Subsystems oder Details zu einigen in Arbeit befindlichen Verbesserungen am ACPI-Subsystem. Auch Sicherheitssthemen, Virtualisierung oder Regression- und Performance-Testing sind Themen einiger Vorträge.
