After months of silence, Google is rapidly pushing its Linux-based Android mobile platform towards the finish line in preparation for a big fourth quarter launch. The recent SDK beta release offers a compelling look into what users can expect to see on upcoming Android hardware, but it left one critical question unanswered: how will third-party developers get their software onto end-user handsets?

In seinem Vortrag (PDF-Datei) auf der LinuxWorld in San Francisco ging er davon aus, dass die Nutzung des Betriebssystems Linux weiter zunehmen werde. Es werde in den kommenden zehn Jahren dazu keine Alternative auf dem Open-Source-Feld geben, glaubt Sutor; dabei werde die Konzentration auf x86-Prozessoren weiter abnehmen.
Die Generaldirektion Informatik der EU-Kommission hat jetzt den Entwurf (PDF-Datei) für ein überarbeitetes Rahmenwerk zur Herstellung von Interoperabilität bei E-Government-Diensten veröffentlicht. In dem Vorschlag für die Novelle des European Interoperability Framework (EIF) plädiert die Brüsseler Behörde allgemein für den Einsatz offener Standards in der Verwaltung. Offenheit senke die Hürden für einen Markteintritt, fördere den Wettbewerb und führe zu mehr Qualität, Auswahl und niedrigeren Preisen. Sie sichere zugleich den Zugang zu Informationen und Diensten. Offene Standards kämen so gerade der öffentlichen Verwaltung zugute, da diese die Kontrolle über eingesetzte Normen oder technische Spezifikationen sowie etwa verwendete Metadaten und Schemata behalten müsse.
