This talk is a polemic that distills the pessimistic side of my feelings about systems research these days. I won't talk much about the optimistic side, since lots of others can do that for me; everyone's excited about the computer industry. I may therefo
The UWIN package allows UNIX applications to be built and run on Windows XP/2000/NT/ME/98/95 with few, if any, changes necessary. UWIN source and binaries are available under the open source Common Public License 1.0.
an instrumentation framework for building dynamic analysis tools. Includes a memory error detector, two thread error detectors, a cache and branch-prediction profiler, a call-graph generating cache profiler, and a heap profiler. It also includes two experimental tools: a heap/stack/global array overrun detector, and a SimPoint basic block vector generator.
Have you ever wanted to change the names of many files at once? Or, have you ever needed to use a default value for a variable that has no value? These and many other options are available to you when you use string operators in bash and other Bourne-deri
VAST is a light-weight network library to support scalable peer-to-peer (P2P) virtual environment / virtual world applications such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs). It is based on the research of Voronoi-based Overlay Network (VON) published
The vb2Py project is developing a suite of conversion tools to aid in translating existing Visual Basic projects into Python.
The conversion includes,
· VB code modules translating to Python code modules
· VB classes to Python classes
· VB Forms to PythonCard forms
· VB Projects to PythonCard projects
Code snippets for Visual Basic & VBA Programmers (Visual Basic (VB), API, Word VBA, Excel VBA, Access VBA, Outlook VBA, and VBScript for ASP) and reference documents
Veusz is a GUI scientific plotting and graphing package. It is designed to produce publication-ready Postscript or PDF output. SVG, EMF and bitmap formats export are also supported. The program runs under Unix/Linux, Windows or Mac OS X, and binaries are provided. Data can be read from text, CSV or FITS files, and data can be manipulated or examined from within the application.

My earlier posts about using Vim were well received and it’s about time for an update. I’ve been doing a lot more work with Vim lately and have spent some time configuring my workflow for peak efficiency, so here’s a snapshot of my current state.

Back in February, I introduced Ian Bicking's virtualenv script for creating isolated Python environments, complete with their own interpreter and site-packages directory. I've been using virtualenv for all of my projects since then, but keeping up with al
an advanced C++ application framework that makes it easy to produce powerful C++ applications. The framework is a based on a thoroughly modern C++ design and has built in support for Rapid Application Development (RAD).
Visual Studio Shell (integrated mode) does not contain any programming language, so it provides the perfect foundation to deploy a development environment for your own language.
This text describes how VMware Command Line Tools communicates with the VMware running on the host machine. Apparently the official VMware-Tools uses the same method.
The Visualization ToolKit (VTK) is an open source, freely available software system for 3D computer graphics, image processing, and visualization used by thousands of researchers and developers around the world. VTK consists of a C++ class library, and several interpreted interface layers including Tcl/Tk, Java, and Python. Professional support and products for VTK are provided by Kitware, Inc.
VXL (the Vision-something-Libraries) is a collection of C++ libraries designed for computer vision research and implementation. It was created from TargetJr and the IUE with the aim of making a light, fast and consistent system. VXL is written in ANSI/ISO C++ and is designed to be portable over many platforms.

An ingenious set of combinators for expressing pattern matching in a type-safe way. No ADTs required. Opens up the possibility of programming languages where we can declare new binding forms just as we declare new functions. abstract: Macros still have not made their way into typed higher-order programming languages such as Haskell and Standard ML. Therefore, to extend the expressiveness of Haskell or Standard ML gradually, one must express new linguistic features in terms of functions that fit within the static type systems of these languages. This is particularly challenging when introducing features that span across multiple types and that bind variables. We address this challenge by developing, in a step-by-step manner, mechanisms for encoding patterns and pattern matching in Haskell in a type-safe way.
