While Problem Based Learning (PBL) has long been established internationally, Team-based learning (TBL) is a relatively new pedagogy in medical curricula. Both PBL and TBL are designed to facilitate a learner-centred approach, where students, in interactive small groups, use peer-assisted learning to solve authentic, professionally relevant problems. Differences, however, exist between PBL and TBL in terms of preparation requirements, group numbers, learning strategies, and class structure. Although there are many similarities and some differences between PBL and TBL, both rely on constructivist learning theory to engage and motivate students in their learning. The aim of our study was to qualitatively explore students’ perceptions of having their usual PBL classes run in TBL format.
In contrast to most traditional bottom-up methods of education, I discuss how taking existing creations and remixing them provides a more grounded and meaningful unstructured educational experience, drawing on examples from creative media such as games, websites, and music.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is imperative for ensuring patient safety. Although teaching strategies to enhance EBP knowledge and skills are recommended, recent research indicates that nurses may not be well prepared to apply EBP. A three-level hierarchy for teaching and learning evidence-based medicine is suggested, including the requirement for interactive clinical activities in EBP teaching strategies. This literature review identifies the teaching strategies for EBP knowledge and skills currently used in undergraduate nursing education. We also describe students’ and educators’ experiences with learning outcomes and barriers.

The way nurses and midwives trained outside the UK and European Economic Area (EEA) re-sit the OSCE assessment will change from 16 July 2018.
Under these new changes, test centres will only require applicants to re-sit the parts of the OSCE assessment they failed and will not need to re-sit parts of the exam they have previously passed.
Eating disorders affect 1%–4% of the population and they are associated with an increased rate of mortality and multimorbidity. Following the avoidable deaths of three people the parliamentary ombudsman called for a review of training for all junior doctors to improve patient safety.. Mobile learning (mLearning) devices (such as tablets and smartphones) are increasingly part of the clinical environment but there is a limited and somewhat conflicting literature regarding the impact of such devices in the clinical learning environment. This study aims to: assess the impact of mLearning devices in the clinical learning environment on medical students’ studying habits, attitudes towards mobile device supported learning; and the perceived reaction of clinicians and patients to the use of these devices as part of learning in the clinical setting.
The British Medical Association (BMA) and NHS Employers have agreed a joint statement regarding a review of the 2016 Terms and Conditions of Service for Doctors and Dentists in Training.
Role modelling is widely accepted as being a highly influential teaching and learning method in medical education but little attention is given to understanding how students learn from role models. This study focuses on role modelling as an active, dynamic process, involving observational learning and aims to explore the process involved, including strategies that learners and medical teachers use to support this.
For the purpose of continuous performance improvement, physicians are expected to reflect on their practice. While many reflection studies are theoretically oriented and often prescriptive in the sense that they conceptualize what reflection should look like, the current study starts with practicing physicians themselves and maps how these physicians conceptualize and experience reflection in daily professional practice.
The nursing and midwifery council (NMC) has launched a new framework for the education and training of nurses and midwives, and new standards of proficiency that nurses will be required to meet before they can apply for registration.
With an emphasis on practising evidence-based medicine, medical schools encourage students’ participation in research as well as providing opportunities to present their findings at conferences. Recognition of such work is a credit to the individual, adding to the list of achievements in their portfolio. In the UK, as part of the standards laid out by the General Medical Council in Tomorrow’s Doctors, it is expected that doctors should function as clinicians and scientists by being able to critically appraise medical literature to provide the best possible patient care.1 This can encourage students to become involved in projects to gain experience in these skills and also to publish this work in academic journals.. The Education Committee questions employers, universities and nursing professionals on nursing degree apprenticeships, their role in promoting social justice and what can be done to allow more people to take part in the scheme.
Letter. Our work captured the experiences and opinions of UK trainee doctors in their second year of training (Foundation year 2 (FY2)) who had experience of working in internal medicine. In reflecting these FY2s’ thoughts, we highlight what aspects of supervision are important to them and detail aspects which were well favoured.. This study identified and investigated the relationship between demographics, mental health problems, positive personality traits and perceived social support and motivation in medical education (MME) among first year medical students.
Human trafficking is a serious violation of human rights, with numerous consequences for health and wellbeing. Recent law and policy reforms mean that clinicians now hold a crucial role in national strategies. 2015 research, however, indicates a serious shortfall in knowledge and confidence among healthcare professionals in the UK, leading potentially to failures in safeguarding and appropriate referral. Medical education is a central point for trafficking training. We ascertain the extent of such training in UK Medical Schools, and current curricular design.
Open access. To assess the feasibility of a nursing educational intervention for inpatient stroke rehabilitation and its acceptability from the nursing staff’s perspective.
Today we're outlining final proposals for the regulation of nursing associates, including the skills and knowledge students will need in order to qualify.
The standards, which were approved by our Council last month, set out the skills and knowledge students will need to meet before they qualify. We’ve also published programme standards that set out how nursing associate students will be taught.
Training has always been an obviously important component of military capability. Less obvious has been the importance of education. There is, however, reason to believe that education is becoming an even more important component than hitherto. The changing character of conflict is pointing towards an environment for military action that is becoming ever more uncertain,…
